Great Rake 2009

Clean up at Pettingill Farm

At mid-morning Saturday, May 2, 2009 a full platoon of volunteers from Riverview Foundation descended on foot down a dirt road off Bow St. in Freeport to Pettengill Farm, a 140 acre public nature-preserve maintained by the Freeport Historical Society.

A total of 75 teen/adult students, friends and family members were part of the “Riverview Kids Who Care” community service project titled “The Great Rake.”

By noon-time nearly two miles of walking trails had been cleared, new areas opened, cherry and apple trees pruned and the flower beds surrounding the historic farm house weeded and cleared for the growing season.

“I was truly moved by the affection the Riverview students have for the natural world. They accomplished so much in such a short time, with such joy!”

—Christina White, Exec. Director, Freeport Historical Society

To celebrate, volunteers enjoyed a Riverview hosted barbeque on the open fields overlooking the Harraseeket River Estuary. The property has no electricity or plumbing and many volunteers remarked on how peaceful it was.
